Location

The Derawan Islands are located in the province of East Kalimantan in Indonesia which is part of Borneo Indonesia. They include Derawan, Sangalaki, Kakaban, Maratua, Panjang, and Samama Island and submerged reefs and islets. They are located in the Sulawesi Sea, on the coastal shelf of East Kalimantan . Due to the remoteness it is very natural and off the big tourist stream.

What can I see
Sangalaki is famous for the large staff like the manta rays. A Seaturtle Monitoring and Research Station is installed on this island. Kakaban is known as the jellyfish lake with millions of stingless jellyfishes and four different species. Within the Berau archipelago you also can find a verity of interesting critters, beautiful nudibranchs, crabs and shrimps and strange looking fish such as ghostpipefishes, scorpionfishes.

How to go there
By flight via Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) with Air Asia to Balikpapan, one additional flight from Balikpapan to Berau, an 2 hours trip by car and with a 1 hours boat transfer you reach the island Derawan.
